Eyebrow Restoration

Our eyebrows play a pivotal role in the appearance of our faces. They frame the eyes and create balance for our faces. There tends to be distinct differences in the shaping of male and female eyebrows with male eyebrows being wider and thicker and the female’s being narrower and more delicate.

The loss of eyebrows will have a significant effect on the look of any individual. Most people affected by this condition choose to pencil in eyebrows or have them tattooed permanently. Tattooed eyebrows sometimes acquire a bluish tint after the brown or black pigment is engulfed by macrophages in the skin. Patients wishing to remove their eyebrow tattoos through laser treatments will need to do so before starting the eyebrow transplant process.

Among the many causes of eyebrow loss are: self-induced, through plucking or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) called trichotillomania, trauma, post-surgical , burns and medical conditions like hyperthyroidism and alopecia areata. In the case of OCD, the disorder needs to be treated and managed before the individual undergoes the eyebrow transplant procedure, or they will still pull out the transplanted eyebrows.

Modern hair transplant techniques such as binocular microscopy, acute angling and dense packing allow for successful eyebrow reconstruction, ensuring a natural and undetectable result.

Definitions of these techniques:

Binocular microscopy- allows the precise trimming of single hair follicular units without any excess tissue but with all the anatomical details to ensure the proper and healthy growth of the new hairs.

Acute angling- Making sites for the transplanted hairs that are nearly flush to the skin so that the hairs are able to lay as flat as possible.

Dense packing- The use of micro blades and microscopic needles aid in the creation of the new follicular sites that are close together and heal rapidly. This creates a thicker and more natural look.

To see the full result of an eyebrow transplant, it can take up to 8 months. Occasionally, an additional eyebrow transplant will be needed to achieve the desired density or thickness. Results are usually optimal since the fuller eyebrows embellish and frame the eyes, which are the single most important feature of the face. They eyebrows and eyes combined play an important role in the perception of beauty and attractiveness as well as sex appeal.

Something to be noted about transplanted eyebrows is the fact that initially, the new hair will grow at the same rate as scalp hair since the transplanted follicles were harvested from the scalp. However, preliminary research by Hwang and Associates indicates that with time, the transplanted hair will assume some of the hair characteristics of their new location. While the eyebrows may or may not assume the growth rate of their transplanted site, plant on trimming the new hairs on a monthly basis. Cosmetically, trimming the transplanted hair at an angle will simulate the pointed end of the original eyebrow hairs. If some of the transplanted hairs grow in unruly, there are styling gels and eyebrow grooming kits to shape them in a natural way.

The benefits of the procedure usually far exceed any inconveniences of needing to trim and groom the new hairs and most patients are very pleased with their restored appearance. Their appreciation also extends to the relief of eliminating the need to pencil in their eyebrows for an unnatural result.
