Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness commonly refers to the genetic form of hair loss where hairline recession and loss of hair in the crown is common in men inheriting this pattern of baldness. This trait is passed down from either your grandfather, grandmother, father or mother’s families.

Another name for male pattern baldness (MPB) is androgenetic alopecia and is the most common type of hair loss occurring in men. This condition is a certain pattern of hair distribution in which the hair is sensitive to the presence of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone breakdown product. After puberty, the male hormone testosterone spikes, causing DHT to rise as well.

When hairs are sensitive to DHT, they are gradually miniaturized until they become fine hair with no pigment, also known as vellus hair (or peach fuzz). The common state in bald men involve the transformation from thick, pigmented hair to vellus hair in the sensitive areas.

Increasing with age, baldness in men starts out around 25% for men 25-30 years of age building to 40% for 40-50 year olds and 50% for men aged 50 and above.
